Deborah Taylor CRFS (Respiratory Scientist), was employed as the Charge Respiratory Physiologist for the Hawke’s Bay Hospital for 22 years. Deborah has had extensive experience in teaching and training community-based spirometry throughout New Zealand for 15 years.
Deborah was part of a working group that published a position paper in Respirology February 2021 “Assessing Spirometry Competence for Community Based Spirometry in Australia and New Zealand”.

Course Outline
This course has been designed to meet the needs of occupational health care nurses and forms
part of the fundamental training required for obtaining spirometry competency certification.

Course Description
The spirometry day will cover: -
The ATS 2019 Spirometry standards
Spirometry testing in Occupational Health
Interpretation of spirometry results
Infection control, including the use of in-line filters
Calibration using a 3-litre syringe
Longitudinal monitoring in occupational health
Competency certification and portfolio submissions
Course Objectives
At the end of the course participants will be able to: -
Competently perform spirometry to American Thoracic Society Guidelines.
Have a good working knowledge of the theoretical aspects of spirometry, with a focus on Occupational Health.
Interpret spirometry results (with or without the Interpretation Chart).
Carry out basic troubleshooting, including care and maintenance of the spirometer.
Perform quality control measures.
